The Blue Jackets are just 26th in scoring and 29th on the power play. Their coach, Rick Bowness, is old school and no dummy. He knows his team must play strong defense if they are going to win.
Columbus has done just that in its last two games, losing to the Wild, 2-1, and beating the Rangers in overtime, 1-0.
The Maple Leafs were amazingly effective defensively in beating the Sharks, 3-1, at home last night.
Now Toronto has to go on the road without rest. So I see the Maple Leafs dialing back their offensive aggressiveness given the spot.
San Jose is a below average defensive team. Montreal ranks 28th defensively. Both teams are aggressive offensively. So I can see each team producing at least three goals apiece.
The Over has cashed in three of the past four meetings.
Before losing 3-1 to the Maple Leafs last night, the Sharks had scored three or more goals in six of their eight games.
There have been at least seven goals scored in six of Montreal's eight games. The Canadiens have scored four or more goals in five of their last seven games.
Carolina and Vancouver already have met this season. The Hurricanes destroyed the Canucks, 7-2, at home on Oct. 8. It was Carolina's fifth consecutive victory against the Canucks.
But don't expect the Hurricanes to take it easy against Vancouver. That's because the Hurricanes are off a 3-2 road loss to the 2-6 Flames. Carolina closed as a minus $2.05 favorite in that game.
Previous to that the Hurricanes had won seven in a row with five of the wins coming by multiple goals.
On top of this, Vancouver is in a bad situational spot returning home for the first time since a six game, 10-day road trip. It is the Canucks' first home game in 16 days.
The Canucks have not improved their horrendous defense. They are allowing the second most goals per game at 4.5 and have the worst penalty kill.
The 76ers did the Knicks a huge favor last season when they took out the Celtics. The Knicks took advantage of that to win their first championship in 53 years.
The Knicks will be honored with a ring and banner ceremony celebrating last year's championship run. That's nice, but a huge distraction.
The 76ers just aren't seething with revenge after being swept in four games by the Knicks last season. They did something about it. They made themselves the best team in the East on paper by adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to go with Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe. Philadelphia also strengthened its bench.
The Knicks basically stood pat. If anything they are weaker after losing underrated backup center Mitchell Robinson, an excellent defender and shot blocker. Over-the-hill veteran Andre Drummond was brought in to replace Robinson. Drummond doesn't come close to being the defensive presence and shot blocker Robinson was.
Yes, it may take time for the new look 76ers to reach peak efficiency. But right now Embiid is healthy and in rare excellent shape. That was not the case very much last season.
Given the 76ers' off the charts talent, huge revenge motivation and the Knicks having to deal with an obvious pregame distraction, this is enough points for the 76ers to cover - if not win straight up.
