We really like home favorite in this matchup. The Maple Leafs (4-4-2) are in a tough spot. They beat the Sharks 3-1 last night and now play the second half of a back-to-back on the road. Their even-strength play has been a problem: they’ve given up 30 goals at 5-on-5 while scoring only 21. Anthony Stolarz is confirmed in goal, but tired legs in front of him will make for a long night.
The Blue Jackets (3-4-0) are rested and have been solid at home, going 3-2-0 at Nationwide Arena. Their big edge is in net: Jet Greaves (2-2-0, 2.58 GAA) is coming off a 1-0 shutout of the Rangers. The power play is a weakness, but Greaves has kept them in every game.
A rested home team with a hot goalie against a Leafs team that has struggled at even strength and is playing its second game in two nights. Give us the Blue Jackets.

We really like under in this matchup. The Celtics are a new-look group. Jaylen Brown and Nikola Vucevic are gone, and Paul George and Mitchell Robinson come in. Jayson Tatum is back healthy after Achilles surgery, but a team working in two new starters on opening night usually looks clunky on offense. The defense should travel, though: the Celtics led the league in scoring defense last season.
The Pistons bring back most of the core that won the East, built around Cade Cunningham and a physical, grind-it-out defense that ranked fourth in points allowed. The concern is the offense: Jalen Duren missed training camp after a contentious contract extension, and the Pistons barely shoot threes, finishing second-to-last in attempts.
Two elite defenses, new pieces on one side and a rusty big man on the other. This one has rock fight written all over it. Give us the under.

We really like home favorite in this matchup. The Thunder open on the road in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals, and they aren’t fully settled. Chet Holmgren will play, but he missed all five preseason games with a quad contusion, and OKC is thin in the backcourt. Shai is Shai, but it’s a lot to ask of him in a hostile building on night one.
The Spurs have this group’s number. Mitch Johnson has locked in a three-guard look of De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper next to Devin Vassell and Wembanyama, and that’s speed plus the league’s best rim protector.
The Spurs knocked the Thunder out in seven games and now get them at home with Wemby fully unleashed. Small number, big edge. Give us the Spurs.
